The change applies to dependents of martyrs from conflicts spanning the 1980s to the 2006 war with Israel, the May 2008 clashes, involvement in Syria, and the recent 66-day war. From now on, families must enroll their children in either the Lebanese University or Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Ma‘aref University, with only registration fees covered—not tuition or living expenses.
The decision provoked widespread dismay. One mother, whose husband died in Syria in 2015, called it a “shock” that took a significant toll on her son’s emotional well‑being after he received the news that long-term support had abruptly vanished.
The austerity is not limited to higher education. Families are now restricted to enrolling children in Hezbollah-associated schools like Al-Mahdi and Al-Mabarat, and health coverage is confined to party-run clinics and hospitals only. Analysts see this as a reduction in the once extensive welfare state Hezbollah built to maintain loyalty within its base.
Observers point to external financial strangulation—notably the closure of land corridors from Iran via Syria, and bans on Iranian flights landing in Lebanon since February—as key factors triggering the retrenchment. Efforts to reroute funds via businessmen and informal smuggling channels reportedly failed to meet the demands of Hezbollah’s vast support apparatus.
According to political analyst Marwan Al-Amin, while some services continue, the support system is crumbling. Previously, public contracts and patronage networks helped offset losses, but these channels have faltered as state corruption intensified. As a cost-cutting measure, the party has scaled back housing and transportation allowances for fighters and reassigned personnel geographically to minimize expenses.
This shift marks a pivotal moment: Hezbollah’s ability to balance its social influence with financial sustainability is now in question. With longstanding privileges eroding, the biggest test lies in whether support from its loyal base can endure the rising hardship.
